January 2010 POTVIN APPOINTED TO CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Noah Potvin, MMT, MT-BC, was recently appointed to the CBMT Exam Committee. Potvin received his master’s degree in music therapy from Temple University, where his research examined the relationship between music therapists’ spiritual beliefs and theoretical orientation. Presently working with Seasons Hospice, Potvin has worked with individuals with chronic mental illness, particularly individuals with co-occurring disorders, and retains a small private practice. In 2008-2009 Potvin served as co-coordinator of the Passages conference for students and new professionals held in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Music Therapy Association. His current research interests center on the implementation of liberation theology principles in music therapists’ professional development and clinical applications.
January 2010 WLODARCZYK APPOINTED TO CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Natalie Wlodarczyk, MM, MT-BC, NICU-MT, was recently appointed to the CBMT Exam Committee. Wlodarczyk earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Stetson University and a Master of Music in Music Therapy from Florida State University. She is currently a doctoral candidate in music education with an emphasis in music therapy at Florida State University with an expected graduation date of May 2010. Wlodarczyk’s primary areas of clinical expertise are music therapy in hospice and bereavement. She also has experience in Alzheimer’s care and in intergenerational programming, and is certified in providing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) music therapy for premature infants. Prior to her doctoral work, Wlodarczyk was the music therapy coordinator and clinical training director at Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, FL where she had extensive experience training music therapy interns and supervising university practicum students. Wlodarczyk has presented at both national and regional conferences on a variety of topics and has published articles on music therapy and hospice care in the Journal of Music Therapy and the Journal of Poetry Therapy.
August 2009 NEW MUSIC THERAPY SCOPE OF PRACTICE RELEASED BY CBMT
A new scope of practice, developed from the results of the 2008 survey by the CBMT Practice Analysis Committee, has been compiled and will go into effect by April 2010. A copy of the new document is available in the BC Status newsletter, Volume 24, No. 1, on the CBMT home page at www.cbmt.org. Specific changes are outlined in the newsletter article on pages 4-10
The CBMT Practice Analysis Study occurs every 5 years and is conducted to identify the current practices being used by board certified music therapists across the country. The information gathered during the practice analysis is then compiled to create a new CBMT Scope of Practice. As a result, the CBMT Scope of Practice defines the body of knowledge that represents competent practice in the profession of music therapy, and identifies what an MT-BC may do in practice.
The CBMT Scope of Practice is utilized as the source of reference for testing specifications and for recertification requirements. The changes within this new scope of practice will impact both educators and clinical training directors as they prepare students for the examination, as well as certificants and Approved Providers as they work toward the goal of recertification.
June 2009 BELGRAVE APPOINTED TO CBMT PUBLIC INFORMATION AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE
Melita Belgrave, PhD, MT-BC, Assistant Professor at the Conservatory of University of Missouri - Kansas City, has been appointed to the CBMT Public Information and Outreach Committee. Dr. Belgrave received her bachelor’s degree in music therapy from Michigan State University. She earned her master’s in music therapy, a certification in aging studies, and a PhD in music education with an emphasis in music therapy at Florida State University. Dr. Belgrave has worked as a music therapist in special education, mental health, rehabilitation, hospice, geriatric, and intergenerational settings throughout Texas and Florida. Her research interests are music therapy with older adults and intergenerational programming. Dr. Belgrave has presented at regional, national, and international conferences, and her research has been published in the Journal of Music Therapy and Music Therapy Perspectives.
January 2009 HURT-THAUT SERVES ON CBMT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Corene P. Hurt-Thaut, MM, NMT, MT-BC, has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for The Certification Board for Music Therapists. Hurt-Thaut is an assistant professor of music therapy in the Department of Music Theatre and Dance at Colorado State University. She has been on the teaching faculty of the Robert F. Unkefer Academy for neurologic music therapy since it was founded in 1999, and a research associate at The Center for Biomedical Research in Music since 1997. She worked as a neurologic music therapist at the Center for Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta from 1992-1995 and at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins from 1997-2000. Her clinical experience has included work with stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, traumatic brain injury, multiple schlerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and autism.
Hurt-Thaut has served on the CBMT Exam Committee as both a member for 6 years and as chair for 2 years. She also served as chair of the Self Assessment Exam Committee in 2005. She has served as president and vice president of the Midwestern Region of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). She has many publications, including three recent book chapters: Music Therapy in Pediatric Healthcare: Research and Evidence Based Practice (AMTA), An Introduction to Music Therapy (Davis, Gfeller, Thaut, 2008) and The Oxford Handbook of Music Psychology (Oxford University Press, 2009).

BIRNBAUM SERVES ON CBMT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Jacqueline Birnbaum, MSEd, MA, NRMT, LCAT, MT-BC, has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors for CBMT. Birnbaum is the Administrative Coordinator and a Senior Therapist at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University. With over 25 years of experience in the field, she has developed music therapy programs at a number of schools in the New York City area in addition to her teaching, supervision, and clinical work at the Center.
Birnbaum has presented on the use of creative music therapy at numerous regional, national, and international conferences, including the World Congress in Brisbane, Australia (2005) and the International Shafallah Forum in Qatar (2008). She has served on many professional committees over the years: the New York State Task Force on Occupational Regulation, the Nominating Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) of the American Music Therapy Association, member-at-large of the Executive Board of the MAR, the Executive Board of the New York Coalition of Creative Arts Therapies (NYCCAT), and Chairperson of the Credentialing Committee of the American Association for Music Therapy. She has served CBMT as a member of the Exam Committee for two terms, and as a member and Chairperson (2008) of the last three Practice Analysis Committees. She currently serves as an Assembly Delegate for the MAR.
January 2009 SARAH LAING RE-APPOINTED TO CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Sarah Laing MMEd, MT-BC was recently re-appointed to a second three-year term on the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) Examination Committee. She holds an undergraduate degree from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a Masters Degree in Music Education/Therapy from the University of Georgia.
Laing interned, and was subsequently employed at NW Regional Hospital in Georgia. She was later employed by the Cleveland Music School Settlement, before pursuing her own music therapy consulting business, MUSICARE. She currently serves six school districts, private clients and preschool programs, in NE Texas. Laing has been a presenter at national and international conferences, and has co-authored several papers.

Joy Schneck, MM, MT-BC of Exton, PA was honored by the Board of Directors, past Board Chairs, and staff of CBMT at the October Board of Directors meeting. She was presented with calligraphy artwork recognizing her fifteen years of outstanding accomplishment as Executive Director of the CBMT. Schneck was honored for her “keen intellect, loving heart, and wise counsel that have affected the profession of music therapy profoundly. All who have known her and have worked with her are deeply grateful for her dedication.”
Schneck has served as the Executive Director since 1993, managing the operations of the organization to nationally certify and re-certify music therapists. Prior to serving as the Executive Director of CBMT, she worked as a music therapist in the pediatric oncology unit of the Medical College of Virginia. She also served for many years as the Director of Professional Programs for the National Association for Music Therapy. She received her undergraduate degree in music education from Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA, completed an equivalency program in music therapy from Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA and received her master's degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Her music therapy clinical training was completed at Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY.
October 2008 LISA GALLAGHER CHAIRS CBMT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Lisa Gallagher, MA, MT-BC from Parma, Ohio, was elected Chair of the CBMT Board of Directors at the October 2008 meeting. Lisa is clinical and research music therapist at The Cleveland Music School Settlement and The Cleveland Clinic, Music Therapy Coordinator for The Cleveland Clinic, and Music Therapy Practicum Instructor/Supervisor at The Cleveland Music Therapy Consortium based at Baldwin-Wallace College. She is Past President of the Association of Ohio Music Therapists and Treasurer of the Great Lakes Region (GLR) of American Music Therapy Association. In addition to music therapy organizations, Lisa has served in a variety of roles in other organizations and Boards. She is the recipient of the 2007 GLR Scholarly Activity Award as well as recipient of the 2008 Blair L. Sadler International Healing Arts Award.
The Board of Directors establishes all policy regarding certification and recertification of music therapists under the credential in accordance with the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation standards. The CBMT is a member of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA), a leader in setting quality standards for credentialing organizations.
October 2008 JANICE HARRIS APPOINTED TO CBMT CONTINUING EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Janice M. Harris, MA, Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC), was recently appointed to a three-year term on the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) of The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). She will serve through December 31, 2011.
Harris graduated from Sam Houston State University with a bachelor degree in Music Therapy, and completed her internship at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) in Houston. After working in the south Texas area in geropsych and brain injury rehabilitation for three years, she returned to Dallas to work in private practice and completed a master degree in Music Therapy at Texas Woman’s University. She has worked in rehabilitation hospitals, pediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric settings, school districts, home health, wellness, and private practice. Currently, she is in private practice in Dallas, TX and created the music therapy program for Lifetime Wellness. Harris is also the host and producer of The Music Therapy Show with Janice Harris on Blog Talk Radio.
Harris previously served the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) as co-chair of the Continuing Education Committee and the Southwestern Region of the AMTA as Secretary, Vice President, and Continuing Education Director. She now serves as the President Elect of the Southwestern Region of the AMTA.

Anita Louise Steele, MMEd, Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC), was recently re-appointed to a second three-year term on the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) of The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).
Anita Louise Steele holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University with a major in music therapy (piano principal). She obtained her Master of Music Education majoring in music therapy from the University of Kansas. She is Board Certified and a member of the American Music Therapy Association. Professor Steele was the creator and Director of Music Therapy as well as a practicing clinician at The Cleveland Music School Settlement from 1966 until 2003. In that position she managed a large department of music therapists and developed service contracts with schools, hospitals, treatment centers and nursing homes. She designed the community-based model for delivery of music therapy services and a community based training model for music therapy interns. In addition, Professor Steele was instrumental in the development of a music therapy degree program in the greater Cleveland area and was its first instructor.
Professor Steele has over thirty-five publications and numerous national presentations on subjects including music therapy service and education, private practice, and the development of data based evaluation systems in music therapy. She also presents frequently on subjects including community based music therapy, the training and preparation of music therapy college students for effective leadership in the field, and the effect of music on physiologic, emotional, and behavioral responses of medically compromised individuals. She has authored and co-authored research articles in the areas of autism and pain management and in community based music therapy. Current research interests include the similarities and differences in personality characteristics of music education and music therapy college majors and professionals in the each field, the impact of music on recall tasks by individuals with Williams Syndrome, and the impact of music/music therapy in medical settings.
Professor Steele was appointed Associate Professor and Director of the Music Therapy Department at Ohio University in 2003. Ms. Steele has served since 1972 as a music therapy consultant to the Kulas Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. She is Chair of the Music Therapy Scholarship Committee of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs. She is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Music Therapy and the Continuing Education Committee of the Certification Board for Music Therapy. She also serves on the Gerontology Board in College of Health and Human Services and is the Historian for the Association for Ohio Music Therapists.
Professor Steele was presented with the Professional Practice Award of the National Association of Music Therapy in 1988, the Honorary Lifetime Membership of the Great Lakes Regional Association in 1999, and the 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Professional Contributions by American Association for Music Therapy. In 2007, The Cleveland Music School Settlement honored Professor Steele with the Music Therapy Trendsetter Award on the 40th anniversary of the Settlement’s Music Therapy Department (the first community-based music therapy service in the country) ceated by Professor Steele in 1966. The Association of Ohio Music Therapists presented Professor Steele with the 2008 Past-President's Award in recognition of contributions made to the profession of music therapy in the state of Ohio.

TERESA (POMREHN) BIRCH APPOINTED TO CBMT CONTINUING EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Teresa (Pomrehn) Birch, Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) was recently appointed to a vacancy on the Continuing Education Committee of The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). She is completing the term of a former committee member, and will serve through December 31, 2010.
Birch earned her Bachelor of Music, with emphasis in music therapy and percussion performance, from The University of Iowa. She completed her internship at Central Wisconsin Center in Madison, WI and became board certified in music therapy in 2002. Birch has provided music therapy services for children and adults with developmental disabilities in a variety of settings, including public schools, vocational workshops, and residential facilities. She also has experience serving individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Birch is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing and plans to develop a music therapy practice in the Dubuque area.

MAUREEN HEARNS ELECTED CHAIR OF CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Maureen Hearns MaEd, Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC), Assistant Professor and Director of Music Therapy at Utah State University, was recently elected Chair of the CBMT Exam Committee, having served on the committee since 2005. Hearns holds three different bachelor degrees in Music Theory and Composition, Education, and Music Therapy; she received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Phoenix. Currently she is studying music psychotherapy with an emphasis in Guided Imagery and Music while pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology.
Following her clinical internship at Twin Valley Forensic Behavioral Health Unit in Columbus,OH, Hearns returned to Utah to establish a private practice in music therapy. She has provided music therapy services to patients at Utah State Hospital, Silverado Alzheimer Residential Center in Salt Lake City, and many individual clients throughout the greater Salt Lake area and Cache County. Her research emphasis has been with women victims of domestic violence, women and children residing in crisis shelters, and is currently conducting research to study the effectiveness of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music with individuals affected by secondary trauma from domestic violence. The study is funded through a New Faculty Research Grant awarded to tenure-track professors at Utah State University.
In addition to her teaching and supervisory responsibilities with music therapy undergraduates, Hearns has made several music therapy presentations at state, regional, national and international conferences. She was President of the Utah Association for Music Therapists from 2002-2006, served as Parliamentarian for Western Region American Music Therapy Association (WRAMTA) in 2005-2006, and since 2005 has served as an Assembly Delegate for WRAMTA. Hearns is currently Chair of the Affiliate Relations Committee for AMTA, an appointed member of the AMTA Judicial Review Board, Newsletter Editor for the Association for Music and Imagery (AMI), and recently served on the Practice Analysis Committee for CBMT.
June 2008 DEBORAH LAYMAN ELECTED CHAIR OF CBMT CONTINUING EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Deborah Layman, MM, NMT, MT-BC was recently re-appointed to a second three-year term on the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) Continuing Education Committee (CEC). The CEC also elected Layman as Chair for 2009 at their June meeting in Athens, Ohio.
Layman graduated from the Florida State University and completed her internship at the Cleveland Music School Settlement. Following her employment at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, Layman became the Music Therapy Program Lead in clinical and research music therapy at Beech Brook, a residential treatment center for severely emotionally disturbed children. Most recently, Layman opened Creating Connections Company, LLC (in partnership with a licensed professional counselor specializing in autism), which provides therapeutic interventions and services to address children’s developmental challenges and provides support and training for their families.
In addition to her tenure on the CBMT committee, she was also appointed to the board of the Galvin Educational Resource Center for Families in 2005. Layman is a frequent national and international conference presenter and has authored four peer-reviewed journal articles and one book chapter concerning music therapy with severely emotionally disturbed children.
March 2008 LACY KIDWELL SERVES ON CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Lacy Kidwell, MM, MT-BC, was recently appointed to serve a three-year term on the CBMT Exam Committee. Kidwell has been the lead music therapist at The Maryland School for the Blind in Baltimore since 2006. In 2007, as Clinical Training Director, she reinstated the internship program and began training music therapy students. She has done extensive work with children who are Deafblind, and presents on the use of music therapy with this population.
Kidwell received her bachelor’s degree in Visual and Performing Arts from The University of Maryland and her master’s degree in Music (concentration music therapy) from Montclair State University. While studying at Montclair, she conducted research on the personal experiences of music therapy interns working in end-of-life care. This research became her master’s thesis, which she completed in 2006. Kidwell completed her music therapy internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and, after receiving the credential MT-BC in 2005, worked in New Jersey as a music therapist with domestic violence and pediatric populations.
Kidwell has presented at AMTA regional conferences on topics including Music Therapy Strategies with Children who are Deafblind; Exploring Clinical Experiences through Songwriting; and The Music Therapy Internship Experience in End-of-Life Care. She is a regular guest speaker at American University on the topic of music therapy and special education.

AMANDA KLINGER APPOINTED TO CBMT CONTINUING EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Amanda (Johnson) Klinger, MT-BC, was recently appointed to a vacancy on the CBMT Continuing Education Committee. She will serve until December 31, 2009, to complete the term of a former committee member.
Klinger graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) with a bachelor degree in Music Therapy and completed her internship at the Children’s Center for Neurodevelopmental Studies in Phoenix, AZ. Following her employment at the Children’s Center, Klinger became the Lead Music Therapist for Heartland Therapy, Inc., an agency in Phoenix that contracts with the Arizona Department of Developmental Disabilities. She provides services in a home-health setting to families with children with developmental disabilities, such as Autism and Down Syndrome.
Klinger previously served her state music therapy organization, the Arizona Music Therapy Association as Vice-President. She also served on their Rules and Regulation Committee.

KATIE BOND SERVES AS PUBLIC MEMBER ON CBMT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Katie Bond, MPA, RN-BC, OCN has been appointed to serve as the Public Member on the CertificationBoard for Music Therapists for a two-year term. As the Public Member, in addition to representing the perspective of the music therapy consumer, some of Bond’s responsibilities will include assisting the seven-member Board with publications, publicity, and marketing efforts.
Bond holds a Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) degree and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University. She currently is the Clinical Pain Specialist for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix Arizona. She has presented over 300 seminars on Pain Management and End of Life Care within Banner Health, Arizona and national conferences. She is Board Certified as a pain management nurse and an Oncology Certified Nurse. Katie is the founding president of the Arizona Pain Initiative and past board member of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives (ASPI). She was awarded the American Society of Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) Advocacy Award in Pain Management in 2006.
Katie’s interest in pain management and quality of life issues for cancer patients lead to her attendance of a presentation by Dr. Deforia Lane on the role of the music therapist in cancer treatment. She then returned to her hospital in 1992 and wrote a grant to develop the first program in music therapy for cancer patients. Over the next 10 years, she was awarded over $150,000 to expand the music therapy program in other Banner Health facilities.

JOKE BRADT APPOINTED TO CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Joke Bradt, PhD, MT-BC, Assistant Director of Temple University’s Arts and Quality of Life Research Center in Philadelphia, was recently appointed by the CBMT Board of Directors to its Exam Committee. Bradt earned her Ph.D. from Temple University. She has clinical expertise in medical music therapy, specifically as it relates to chronic and acute pain management, and has served on the music therapy faculty of Montclair State University.
Bradt is an Executive Board Member of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Music Therapy Association and serves on a variety of professional committees. She has presented her clinical work and research findings extensively at national and international conferences, and has authored and co-authored several music therapy articles and book chapters. Most recently, she completed Medical Music Therapy: A Meta-Analysis (Dileo & Bradt, 2005). Currently, Bradt is involved as primary author or co-author in six systematic reviews of the prestigious Cochrane Collaboration. Her research interests include: systematic reviews, efficacy of music therapy interventions with medical populations, ethical issues in music therapy research, music improvisation methods for pain management, and quality of life issues. Bradt brings extensive background as a board-certified music therapist in the areas medical music therapy and quantitative research to the CBMT exam committee.
July 2007 KIMBERLY SENA MOORE APPOINTED TO CBMT EXAM COMMITTEE
Kimberly Sena Moore, MM, MT-BC, President of Neurosong Music Therapy Services, Inc., was recently appointed by the Board of Directors of the CBMT to its Exam Committee. Ms. Sena Moore holds a Master of Music Degree in Music Therapy from Colorado State University and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa. She is certified in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) and is a Fellow in the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy. Through Neurosong, she provides music therapy services to a variety of agencies and facilities in the northern Colorado area, specializing in the areas of trauma, oncology, and neurorehabili-tation. Ms. Sena Moore is an active presenter and has been involved in the music therapy profession at local, state, regional, and national levels.

HADSELL ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Nancy A. Hadsell, PhD, MT-BC, Professor and Coordinator of Music Therapy at Texas Woman’s University, was recently elected to serve on the CBMT Board of Directors. Hadsell received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Her research interests are in music therapy education, music therapy for clients with developmental disabilities, external structure in the music therapy process, functional music skills in the practice of music therapy, and regulatory issues related to the practice of music therapy. Prior to entering academia, Hadsell was Music Therapist and Clinical Training Director at the DeKalb-Rockdale Psychoeducational Center in Decatur, GA.
Dr. Hadsell previously served the CBMT Board of Directors from 2000-2003, and during that time served as the Board Liaison to the Continuing Education Committee. Since 2003, she has served on the CBMT Legislative Regulatory Affairs Committee, and as one of the CBMT Representatives to the Group of 8 in NY State, reviewing information related to the NY State Creative Arts Therapy license.

WALWORTH ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Darcy D. Walworth, MM, MT-BC was recently elected to serve on the CBMT Board of Directors. Walworth completed her Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Florida State University and is currently in Tallahassee pursuing her doctoral degree. She gained music therapy clinical experience as both staff music therapist and Coordinator of Music Therapy and Arts in Medicine at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, and also worked as a music therapist in hospice care for Big Bend Hospice of Tallahassee. Walworth has published research in both the Journal of Music Therapy and in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing. She authored a chapter in the AMTA publication, Music Therapy in Pediatric Healthcare: Research and Evidence Based Practice, and co-authored Medical Music Therapy; A Model Program for Clinical Practice, Education, Training, and Research.

Deanna Hanson-Abromeit, PhD, MT-BC, Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, was recently appointed to a vacancy on the CBMT Continuing Education Committee. She will serve until December 31, 2007, to complete the term of Dena Register, PhD, MT-BC, who resigned from the committee to accept the CBMT Regulatory Affairs Advisor position.
Dr. Hanson-Abromeit earned her Bachelor of Music and Masters of Arts in Music Therapy from The University of Iowa. She earned the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education/Music Therapy at The University of Kansas. She has worked in the hospital setting with pediatrics, adults and psychiatry, as well as provided contractual music therapy to individuals with developmental disabilities, hospice and early intervention. Hanson-Abromeit presents regularly at regional, national and international conferences. She is currently the editor of a monograph on music therapy in the hospital setting, published by the American Music Therapy Association. Hanson-Abromeit’s area of clinical and research focus is with premature, critically-ill and at-risk infants.

MUSIC THERAPY CREDENTIAL IS REGISTERED
The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) is pleased to announce that its “MT-BC” credential was granted registration by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This registration is an intellectual property right that is granted to CBMT to limit the use of the “MT-BC,” Music Therapist-Board Certified credential. The right to use the “MT-BC” extends to music therapists who have the appropriate training, have passed the board examination, and have been granted the “MT-BC” certification. The mark may be utilized only by music therapists providing music therapy services within the CBMT Scope of Practice. No other similar mark may be used for a similar service that might be used to manipulate or confuse the public regarding the title or the service rendered.
Music therapy is the specialized use of music by a credentialed professional who develops individualized treatment and supportive interventions with people of all ages and ability levels to address their social, communication, emotional, physical, cognitive, sensory and spiritual needs.
The Certification Board for Music Therapists is a non-profit certifying agency whose mission is to nationally certify qualified individuals to practice in the profession of music therapy. It is fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
October 2006 DENA REGISTER HIRED AS CBMT REGULATORY AFFAIRS ADVISOR
Dena Register, Assistant Professor of Music Therapy and Music Education at the University of Kansas, has been hired by the Certification Board for Music Therapists as Regulatory Affairs Advisor. Her responsibilities are to assist the CBMT in addressing legislative and regulatory issues, to work jointly with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) in forwarding state recognition of music therapy related to regulation and reimbursement, and to make recommendations to the CBMT Board of Directors related to those issues.
Dr. Register is a graduate of Florida State University. Her clinical music therapy expertise encompasses early intervention programs, students with special education needs, abused women and children and hospice care. Primary research interests include music therapy in early intervention and literacy skill development, as well as music therapy education and consultation/ collaboration among related disciplines. Dr. Register is a frequent presenter at both national and international professional conferences and her work has been published in the Journal of Music Therapy, Music Therapy Perspectives.
